The Datomia® virtual appliance (called Datomizer®) is a distributed, scalable, fault-tolerant and highly available storage system. It allows organizations to combine geographically dispersed cloud storage providers into a single namespace that is transparent on Unix and Windows systems in the same way as any other file system.
A Datomizer® instance is provisioned as a virtual appliance or Docker container that can run under any virtualization framework, such as VMware, Xen or OpenStack. Alternatively, it can be easily packaged on a hardware appliance.
Under the hood, Datomizer® is running on an Ubuntu distribution of Linux. The appliance is preconfigured with a firewall and pre-installed security certificates for secure SSL and SSH communications.

Smart caching ensures frequently required information is kept locally, providing Tier-1 type storage performance.
How It Works
The Datomia® virtual appliance is a NAS storage machine. Its virtual hard drive can be accessed from any server within the secure network, using iSCSI, NFS or CIFS/SMB protocols.

The Datomizer® Object Storage Layer Module
Datomizer®’s object storage layer ensures consistent integration with public and private storage nodes. Object storage is vastly more scalable than traditional file system storage. This is because it is significantly simpler. Instead of organizing files in a directory hierarchy, object storage systems store files in a flat organization of containers, using unique IDs to retrieve them.
Unlike traditional object storage approaches, such as Amazon S3 and Hadoop, Datomia®’s object storage uses patent pending Data Atomizer™ technology. This creates and stores Data DNA® rather than triplicating every object, as is the case with Amazon, Azure or Hadoop systems.
The Data Atomizer Module
Datomia®’s patent pending Data Atomizer technology module creates Data DNA® from objects stored in the Datomizer® object storage. The final processed and encoded data chunks are called Data AtomsTM.
The number of Data AtomsTM created from every object is a parameter of the amount of storage nodes bound with a particular file system within the Datomizer® Virtual Vault.
Data Atomizer performs three major operations on a stored data object:
- 3D (three dimensional) data slicing and multidimensional mixing
- Military level encryption (AES-128, AES-196 or AES-256)
- Data encoding against failures with efficient and flexible algorithm
Datomizer® data encoding works in such a way that the Data AtomsTM do not contain any sequence of bytes from the original data object, even with the encryption option disabled.
